Diamonds Revisited with Dudley Shugart

Join in the fun in this class, designed around remaking diamond blocks from years gone by. Unlike the vintage quilts we’re recreating, our diamonds are all cut and sewn at a perfect 60-degree angle, making them simple to piece together! In addition to learning to accurate cuts, you will learn how to place your sashing placing so your blocks appear correctly in the quilt. All students should complete several blocks during class, and you will leave with all the skills needed to complete your quilt top.
Student Supply List: each student should bring the following:
- 8-12 coordinating fabrics. Each block requires three fabrics.
- Two of the fabrics will be cut into 2 ½ in. wide x 44 in. (WOF) strips. The third fabric will start from a 4½ in. wide strip by at least 32 in. long.
- 1½ yards sashing material. You may find that your sashing fabric is best selected after a few blocks are made (see blocks photo).
- A ruler with a 60-degree angle. One example is the 60 Degree Triangle 8-1/2 in. Quilt Ruler from Creative Grids.
- rotary cutter and cutting mat.
- sewing machine in good working order that you are comfortable using
- basic sewing notions (thread, pins, scissors, fabric marking tools, etc.)
Note: students are expected to have basic sewing skills and knowledge of their sewing machine — this is not an introduction to sewing or a beginning sewing class.
About the Instructor: Dudley Shugart, a member of the Burke chapter of Quilter’s Unlimited, has been quilting for decades as well as having years of experience working at quilt shops, including Artistic Artifacts! Dudley also periodically hosts mini quilting demonstrations and creates many of the beautiful sample quilts you see on display.
