Vintage Revisited Block #5

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Vintage Revisited is the baby of Mary Kerr. She gathered 19 quilters from around the country, various levels of experience and gave us a challenge. Yes! I was part of this wonderful challenge, my first ever! This challenge was right up my alley!! But there were deadlines…… and rules…..which I am not good at…… But I did complete all 6 quilts. Yeah me! Over 2 years Mary sent each of us the same vintage quilt block, we had to incorporate something of the block into a 24″x24″ quilt. We could use a part of the block or all of the block our choice. My first quilt incorporated a vintage embroidery, and that began my challenge within a challenge! Each of my 6 quilts incorporated a vintage embroidery.  We at the Annex will get to enjoy the quilts in person, we have block #5 now hanging on our walls.

Hand dyed wool fabrics

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

In a earlier post, I showed you some quilts made from wool, cotton and felted fabrics. I got so excited that I dyed more wool fabrics. Of course the white wool suiting is the most wonderful, but the plaids, black/whites are pretty cool also. I have added many of the wools to my website for purchase. Navagation: fiber then click on wool.

When I dye fabrics I am winging it!  There is no science in my dyeing. And definately no repeatability. I truly dye by accident.  But I do think that when you begin dyeing science is good. One of the best dye classes I have taken is with Carol Soderlund, website: http://carolsoderlund.com/ . She is very scientific, a great teacher and gave me several “ aha moments”. I thought that you had to dye wool and silk fibers with Lanaset dyes, I was dyeing wool this way for years when I was a weaver. You don’t. Procion Dyes with vinegar instead of soda ash, and heat works great! All of my wools and silks are dyed this way. In addition you can use dyes that have sat around too long for cotton!! Another aha moment!! That’s what’s nice about knowing your science!!

If you are interested in dyeing fabrics and/or fibers I recommend a class with Carol Soderlund and/or Ann Johnston. Ann wrote my all time favorite instruction book about dyeing: Color by Accident, low water immersion dyeing, which I carry and you can purchase by clicking on the link.
