Artistic Artifacts: Row x Row On the Go!

The theme for this year’s Row by Row Experience was On the Go! The Artistic Artifacts row (pictured below) features our Batik Tambal Exclusive Batik to create our “Pinwheels In Motion” row. “Hibernation” is now over, and our 2017 Row by Row kits are now available for purchase online!

Kits for our row include the June Tailor® Charming Circles Ruler, a piece of Avalon Bleached Muslin for background, Mistyfuse® lightweight fusible and a sample spool of WonderFil 50 wt sewing thread, either Konfetti™ or Tutti.

You may download our 2017 Row by Row Experience pattern for free (PDF, 1.1M) for your personal use. All patterns are copyright Artistic Artifacts, all rights reserved; it is not permitted to copy or transfer the pattern in any format. CR8 ART, the 2017 fabric license plate for Artistic Artifacts

Our 2017 custom “license plate” CR8 ART (pictured here) is also available for purchase online! If you have collected a stack of the unique license plates offered by most Row by Row shops, visit our website for cute accessory patterns created by Sue O'Very Designs that incorporate these fun souvenirs from your shop hop travels.

As always, we encourage you to make this row your own! We used a BERNINA built-in decorative circle stitch and Tutti thread on our row around the edge of the circles (see detail photo below); satin stitch around the edge of the circles, free-motion quilt the circles; leave the edges of the circles free; use different thread weight(s) for stitching; block print in the solid squares with our wooden printing blocks; embellish with hand stitching...and more!

To join in the Row by Row fun each summer, all that’s necessary is to pay an in-person visit to us — or any participating quilt shop — and ask for your free row pattern (limited to one per person; for in-person shoppers/walk-in customers only).

Quilt to Win!

Each year Row by Row quilters are eligible to win a prize stash of 25 fat quarters — 6¼ yards of fabric! Pictured above is our 2017 winner, Susan Lee, with her beautiful quilt. Visit our blog for more photos and information about Sue’s winning quilt!

The rules are simple: complete a quilt using at least 8 different rows from 8 different 2017 participating shops, and if you are the first to bring it into a participating shop, you win. One prize per shop, as well as one prize per quilter. (A completed quilt means it must be quilted, bound and labeled to be eligible for a shop prize; the 2017 deadline for turning in a completed quilts is October 31, 2017.) In addition to the fat quarter fabric prize, most shops are offer a bonus prize for those using the store’s row in your quilt — we always do!

Each state/area has a Facebook page (visit the Row by Row website for links) and participating shops post photos of their rows, license plates and quilts submitted for a prize (note that you do not have to be a member of Facebook to see the Row by Row photos)! Shops love to be creative with the theme each year as they work it into their row, so visit to see the wide variety in how each year’s theme is interpreted. The Virginia state Facebook page includes Artistic Artifacts: www.facebook.com/VARowbyRowExperience. Read some of the amazing stories about the rowers (quilters) and Row by Row quilt shops around the world on the Row by Row Studio blog.

All New: Row by Row Junior!

When traveling with an adult, children ages 6-14 can receive a free row pattern in any participating Row by Row Junior store! The patterns are designed and written just for kids. Like adult Row by Row, children need to be present in the shop to get the free pattern handout. Note that Row by Row Junior patterns can still be distributed — they do NOT go into hibernation.

Setting Rows: Use Your Creativity

Each year you decide what pattern to use for your quilt. Stack your rows, arrange around a center medallion, make them horizontal, vertical, upside down, on the front, on the back, whatever you like! You are the designer. Be creative and have fun, but to be eligible to win, you must make certain you have used 8 different rows from 8 different participating shops. Although the quilt shops are organized by area, quilters have no borders. Travel, shop, collect patterns and add rows to your quilt from anywhere!
