Precious, used tea bags, bits of painted paper, and some magical stitches are all strung together to form delightful Tea Bag Totems. The lowly tea bag, when dried and emptied, becomes the foundation for a precious piece of art. Each tea bag will be collaged using special, hand-painted papers cut into realistic or abstract shapes. The addition of free-motion machine sewing and hand stitching will unify your collection, and when strung together will become a wondrous art work. However, if you’d prefer, this project can be beautifully made without any sewing at all. A mini wooden spool or a tiny wire hanger will serve to suspend your column of images telling your own unique tale. Your class kit — a $35 fee paid directly to the instructor on the morning of class — includes nearly everything you need: a dozen tea bags (pre-fused, and ready to use), wide assortment of hand-painted papers, matte medium and glue, Mistyfuse, Muslin, parchment and freezer paper, miniature wire hangers and wooden spools, additional dried tea bags for your use and the shared use of Posca Markers, fine-line marker pens, paint brushes, embroidery threads and needles, and additional supplies.

About the Instructor: Growing up with creative, artsy parents, Libby Williamson’s childhood was a world of fabric scraps and yarn, pins and needles, paint, Elmer’s Glue, and a whole lot of Scotch Tape. As an art major in college, Libby focused on the classic techniques of printmaking but still found time for knitting and fiber arts projects. The Blue Denim Design, Villa Park, CA artist’ printmaking background led to a passion in surface design on fabric, which her current work reflects. Published in Quilting Arts (and a former cover artist!), Libby is known for her art quilts using layers of hand-painted and dyed fabrics, appliquéd layers of free-motion stitched components and embedded found objects. *Note: if you do not own a sewing machine, a limited number will be provided for class use. Waits should be expected; students are asked not to monopolize a machine.
