Create a playful mixed media bird collage using a combination of vintage and contemporary design! With Judy and Liz as your guides, you will learn fabric collage, discover tons of hand and machine stitch ideas and have a play with screen printing and block printing. Using a vintage quilt block, you will choose your exotic bird fabric and create the first layer of your collage. It will then be enhanced using Thermofax screens and hand carved wooden printing blocks using Artistic Artifacts Textile Paints, while machine decorative stitches and hand stitches will add depth and interest. Your class kit — a $25 fee paid directly to the instructors the morning of class — includes a vintage quilt block base, vintage and contemporary fabrics, embellishments and trim, paint, thermofax screens and wooden printing blocks for your use. Student Supply List Rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler, your own favorite hand-stitching needles and threads, small scissors. About the Instructors: Liz Kettle of Textile Evolution is a fabric and mixed media artist with a passion for teaching others the joy of making art and the creative process. After acquiring the skills for success in the traditional quilting arena she began to delve into art quilting and discovered a world of freedom and fun in mixed media. Liz is a co-author of Fabric Embellishing: the Basics and Beyond and Threads: The Basics & Beyond, and the author of First-Time Beading on Fabric and Know Your Needles: A Carry-Along Guide for Choosing Hand and Machine Needles. Judy Gula, owner of Artistic Artifacts, is the author of Colorful Batik Panel Quilts: 28 Quilting and Embellishing Inspirations from Around the World. Judy believes that to make art, you must live art. She finds inspiration in new and vintage materials, her interactions with other artists, and in surprising and unexpected experiences.
