Seth Apter Mixed Media Workshops at Artistic Artifacts

For Your Eyes Only
Saturday, January 24, 2015:
Capture and contain your artistic spirit in the form of a one-of-a-kind artist book. In this workshop you will transform the most basic of materials — commercial book covers, cardstock, and paper — into a memorable and unique page-turner.
The focus of the class will be on learning a no-sew binding technique that will allow you to bind single sheets into your book. Once your books are bound, we will discuss creating collaged pages using a gridded-background technique. Your choice of ephemera, stamps, rub ons, marks, drawings, etc. will be used to add design to the pages.
You will leave with a fully-bound book and will have made a start on your inner, collaged pages — which, given the limitations of time, you will need to complete at home.

- Book covers: Matching front and back book covers, sized approximately 6½" x 4"-ish, separated from the book block in advance, or it can be done in class. (Note that while this technique can be applied to any size covers, for this workshop Seth suggests more compact covers)
- Cardstock: At least 6-12 sheets of either 9½" x 11" or 12" x 12" cardstock. Color matters, as the edges of the cardstock will be seen as part of the binding. Note that the larger your book covers, the more cardstock you will need for the binding and pages.
- Adhesive: Your choice of adhesive for the book construction (glue sticks, PVA, etc.) and for the collaged pages (matte medium, glue stick, etc.).
- Paper: Your choice of assorted paper for the collaged pages, including hand painted, scrapbook paper, ephemera, magazine pages, etc.
- Include both paper with designs and/or text as well as plain paper.
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Awl
- Craft knife and cutting/craft mat
- Bone folder
- “Flotsam & Jetsam” — Decorating your pages and your cover is where your personality will come out. Bring in your choice of:
- alphabet and image rubber/clear stamps plus assorted ink pads, alphabet and design rub-ons, favorite pens and markers, ephemera, hand painted papers, favorite scrapbook paper, scraps of fabric, stickers, decorative and/or masking tape, your own small drawings, magazine clippings of images and text, etc.
- Optional: You can also bring lightweight metal pieces for your cover, but note that we will only be using glue to attach objects to the cover during this workshop.

A deck...52 cards. A year...52 weeks. Make the most of this synchronicity by creating a one-of-a-kind, mixed media journal that you can use to document a year in your life, week by week.
In this workshop we will start by taking an ordinary deck of playing cards and, by using paint and paper, end up with a unique and personal journal... small in size but large in impact. Along the way you will learn the secrets of creating textured and layered backgrounds, the basics of collage composition, and tricks of the trade to tie it all together. The uses for your creation are limited only by your imagination and can include a place to hold your weekly journaling, goals, documentation, affirmations, drawings, photographs, thoughts, love notes, or anything else. - Deck of regulation size playing cards
- Your deck must be prepared in advance of the workshop:
please coat both sides of all the cards with black gesso
- Your deck must be prepared in advance of the workshop:
- Fluid acrylics (assorted colors)
- Acrylic glazing liquid (Seth prefers prefer Golden brand)
- Paint brushes (cheap bristle brushes work well), water container and paint palette
- Collage adhesive (your favorite)
- Pens and markers (your favorites)
- Decorative tape (approximately 2 feet)
- Fabric strip or narrow ribbon (between 3- to 4-feet long)
- Brayer
- Collage material — remember you will be working on a small scale! — for example:
- decorative and printed paper, ephemera, clip art, rub-ons, stickers, letters, words and phrases in any form, etc.
- Spray bottle
- Optional: Small rubber/polymer stamps and ink pads (your assorted favorites)
About Seth Apter
Seth Apter is a mixed media artist, instructor, author and designer from New York City. His artwork has been exhibited in multiple exhibitions and can be found in numerous books, independent zines, and national magazines.
Seth is the voice behind The Pulse, a series of international, collaborative projects that are the basis for his books The Pulse of Mixed Media and The Mixed-Media Artist, published by North Light Books. He also has two workshop DVDs: Easy Mixed Media Surface Techniques and Easy Mixed Media Techniques for the Art Journal.
Seth’s live workshops have been held throughout the United States as well as Mexico and Australia. He is a member of the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA), a blogger for Spellbinders Paper Arts, and a stencil designer for StencilGirl Products.
