Power Art is the March exhibit at Del Ray Artisans Gallery in Alexandria, VA. Power Art is defined as art that makes viewers see familiar things in new ways; evokes emotions, and makes an impact. Area artists were encouraged to be experimental, with no restrictions on materials. Some of the juried artworks depict emotional, physical, natural and spiritual power; others represent the power of craftsmanship, fabric, and recycled materials.
As part of the Power Art exhibit, approximately half of the Power Suits Art Quilt Challenge quilts are also featured. Just back from their display during the Road to California Quilt Showcase, this is only the second time the Power Suit quilts have been on display in the DC area! While unfortunately due to space limitations the entire collection cannot be included in the gallery, additional quilts will be available for viewing during Cyndi Souder’s gallery talk (see below) on March 9, so plan to attend!
Del Ray Artisans (DRA) was founded in 1992 as a community art center to host exhibits, slide lectures, classes, workshops, and receptions, and to introduce local audiences to fine and functional art. The DRA gallery mounts a new exhibit approximately once a month, each with a different theme and welcoming artisans in every medium while encouraging quality and diversity.
When a local tailor contacted Cyndi Souder (www.MoonlightingQuilts.com) to offer her his outdated fabric swatches, a quilt challenge was born. Living in the Washington, DC area, Power Suits was the obvious theme. Artistic Artifact’s Judy Gula and Cyndi worked together to develop a theme, package swatches, and offer them for free to interested quilters. Distributing challenge packets at quilt shows, lectures, and online through their blogs and websites, Cyndi and Judy invited quilters to express their take on Power Suits through their artwork. The resulting quilts address such diverse topics as politics, family, worklife, playing cards, and super heroes. Power Suit artists come from 21 states and from Canada. A Power Suits Quilts CD that includes the beautiful quilt images and accompanying artist statements is available to purchase. The CD includes two formats: a PowerPoint presentation that requires PowerPoint on your machine to view and a PDF that requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download; preloaded on most computers) to view.
The quilts were exhibited at Artistic Artifacts from October 22 to November 23, 2011 (learn more and view photos of the Opening Night Artist Reception). In 2012 the exhibit was displayed at the Lancaster Spring Quilt Show (Lancaster, PA), March 14-17, was included in the Upper MidWest Show/Machine Quilting Today event August 1-4 in Oconomowoc, Wisconson (near Milwaukee) and was displayed inOctober 2012) at School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The challenge quilts were most recently featured at the Road to California Quilters Conference and Showcase (Ontario, CA) January 24-27, 2013.
