Artist Background
Judy Vincentz Gula has been working in fiber since elementary school. Since middle school, she has been a weaver, a spinner, a dyer, and a collector. Later, she studied fashion design at Radford University, earning degrees in fashion design and business marketing. Judy now enjoys merging all that she has learned from her many interests and channeling that into making art quilts and samples for her shop, Artistic Artifacts. Judy Gula, Owner of Artistic Artifacts
Judy grew up in a family business, Electrodyne, which designs, manufactures and supplies automotive accessories for European automobiles. Her entrepreneurial spirit was born of this real-world education, preparing her to conceive and open Artistic Artifacts. Her family also imbued in her the “family collector gene,” which allows her to see the potential in what others have discarded.
Judy generally instigates artistic high jinx with everyone who visits her shop. Judy travels to shows, conferences, and guilds to share her excitement about what’s happening in today’s art quilt and fiber world. Her lectures and workshops highlight how today’s artists are using materials from many different disciplines to create mixed media collage work and fiber art.

She has taught at Textile Evolution in Colorado Springs, CO, Art Is in Danbury, CT, Art Is...in the Garden in NY, and Make It University at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX. In her shop, Artistic Artifacts, she hosts the Judy’s Altered Minds (JAMs) mixed media group and the Quilters Unlimited Burke Chapter’s art quilt bee.
Judy’s work has appeared in A Quilt Block Challenge: Vintage Revisited and Cutting-Edge Art Quilts, both by Mary W. Kerr; Creating Celebration Quilts by Cyndi Souder; First-Time Beading on Fabric by Liz Kettle; and the Style section of The Washington Post. She also contributed to Artcard Ideas 2007. She spent fifteen years as a member of the Potomac Fiber Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, and her studio has been included on the James Renwick Alliance Studio Tour. In addition, her work has been juried into the biennial Sacred Threads Quilt Exhibition and has been shown at the Quilters Unlimited of Northern Virginia Quilt Show. Judy is a member of the Potomac Fiber Arts Guild, Studio Art Quilt Associates, the Surface Design Association, and the Burke Chapter of Quilters Unlimited of Northern Virginia. Judy is a cofounder of Power Suits: An Art Quilt Challenge and Arts & Old Lace: An Art Quilt Challenge (learn more).
In January 2012 Judy purchased Batik Tambal, which imports handmade ethnic Indonesian batik paintings (panels), fabrics and other textiles by some of the finest batik artists from Indonesia as well as vintage and new collectible copper tjaps (the handmade tool batik artisans use to stamp designs with wax onto fabric).
