We’re currently hard at work setting up a gallery of 20 of award-winning quilter Mary Kerr’s contemporary/vintage quilts all around the store, preparing for this weekend’s event! For those of you in the Virginia, DC and Maryland areas, please make plans to join us this Sunday, April 22, 2:00 – 5:00 pm, as we host Mary Kerr and her fabulous quilts. Mary will be signing copies of her book, A Quilted Memory — Ideas and Inspiration for Reusing Vintage Textiles. “I get my energy by taking pieces and scraps from yesterday and making them into new works of art,” writes Mary on her website. “Each compilation quilt honors those who came before us and celebrates all that we are able to do and be today.”

A Quilted Memory by Mary Kerr

Mary’s books offer tips and ideas on how family memories can live on by creating contemporary quilts from vintage textiles, encouraging quilters to breathe new life into objects that otherwise stay in the trunk or the dresser drawer. A Quilted Memory features more than 100 photos showing feed sacks, doilies, and vintage clothes with meaning and stories turned into lovely modern quilts.

Enjoy this complimentary invitation to have your copy signed (copies will be available to purchase), view examples of Mary's techniques, and mingle with old and new quilting friends!

We’ll soon have more news on our summer and fall class calendar! Current upcoming programs include two classes repeated due to popular demand:

No stitching, no thread and no glue, just medium and large beads and bits, some wire and several pairs of pliers are all that is required. In this all-day class you’ll learn all that is needed to create and finish this wonderful custom piece. Elizabeth’s blog features an article and photos about a previous edition of this class — visit it to learn more!
  • Thursday, May 24Gelatin Mono Printing with Elizabeth Woodford. Using gelatin trays as a printing surface for paper and textiles, you’ll use common household items to create patterns and textures for one-of-a-kind papers and fabrics for use in any mixed media or fiber project. Visit Elizabeth’s blog for photos of the March 31 class and some of the spectacular prints that emerged from the fun!
  • Saturday June 9Silk Screening with Thermo Fax Screens. We’ll have full information and a registration link available soon (watch our website or call us at 703-823-0202, ext. 213 to reserve your spot), but mark your calendars —you won't want to miss this opportunity!
  • Studio Tech Art Quilt Journey: Part 1 new rescheduled dates: July 14, August 11, [Skip September], October 13 and November 17. Are you an art quilter looking to learn or brush up on the basics of design, or are you a traditional or new quilter wondering what all the “art quilt” fuss is all about? In this ongoing Art Quilt class, we’ll talk about design and composition, critique and color, concept and experimentation. Remember, registering for this Part 1 class doesn’t mean you’re a beginner; it means we all start together, form group bonds, and create a safe place to share our work. (Note: We require 15 participants for this class, so spread the word and register now with a friend!)
