New Wooden Printing Blocks
Block printing is a centuries old method for imprinting fabric, paper, clay and more in an easy, quick, uncomplicated and rewarding way. Artistic Artifacts carries a large range of wooden printing blocks, and has recently unpacked some wonderful new designs! These beautiful blocks are all hand-carved in southern India by skilled craftsmen using traditional methods. After carving, blocks are soaked in olive oil, which ensures they are easy to clean, adaptable and durable.
How to Block Print Fabric and Paper
Visit Judys blog for a tutorial of using wooden printing blocks for surface design! She describes how block printing lends itself to a wide variety of creative printing techniques. (Pictured here are fabric quilts blocks designed and block printed by Cyndi Souder of Moonlighting Quilts, author of Creating Celebration Quilts.)
Use our wooden printing blocks with textile paint, such as Stewart Gill or PROFab (dab it onto the block with a sponge), to direct print onto fabric — best results come from having a dense foam mat underneath the surface you are printing onto. Another fascinating option on fabric is using deColourant with your blocks, as in Judys blog example. They are magic to use with your Gelli Arts™ Gel Printing Plate or other forms of monoprinting on fabric or paper.
Working with our friend and talented textile artist Jamie Malden, the owner of Colouricious (the United Kingdoms leading source of inspiration for textile art and crafts), we are striving to spread the word about wooden printing blocks, exposing surface design enthusiasts to this craft and ensuring the growth of this industry (and fair wages) in India. Get a wonderful introduction to block printing by watching this YouTube video from Colouricious.
We are very proud of our relationship with the woodcarvers from India, who use their considerable skills and techniques to hand-carve our designs, both traditional and contemporary designs. With each new shipment, new patterns arrive! Check our website on a regular basis to see newly designed wooden printing blocks.
Inspired Block Printing DVD
