The Wooly Block Adventure!
From the folks who bought you The Row by Row Experience, the Wooly Block Adventure™ is for those who enjoy stitching with wool — and Artistic Artifacts participated for Fall 2016! The Adventure ran from October 15 - December 15. Our free Wooly Block pattern, created with the theme of Winter Wonderland, was stamped from one of our wooden printing blocks and stitched, by Christine Vinh of StitchesnQuilts, using Tentakulum fibers onto hand-dyed wool.
See the blocks and the winners on Facebook: connect with the Wooly Block Adventure community! To win, simply create a project of your choice, using at least eight Wooly Block patterns from eight different participating shops. Be the first to bring a completed into a participating shop to win a 16 x 16 inch wool fat quarter and a $25 gift certificate. Participants have until February 15, 2017 to complete their project to turn in for a prize.
Note that each Wooly Block Adventure pattern has a tag printed or attached to it. Please cut out and bring the tags (or bring the whole pattern) from each participating store when you seek to claim a prize. The tags verify that you collected original patterns. Thanks to everyone for playing fair by respecting the event and the work of the designers!

For the 2016 Row by Row Experience, Artistic Artifacts recruited the talented Cyndi Souder of Moonlighting Quilts to design our row using the 2016 theme of Home Sweet Home. Featuring paper-pieced houses and trees, our row was stitched using a wonderful mix of Tim Holtz fabrics and our Australian Aborigine-Designed fabrics. The windows (plain white here) can be filled in in a variety of ways: using fabrics that have been prepared for photographs or other images, stenciling, doodling with fabric markers — whatever you can imagine! The Row by Row Experience began in 2011 modestly, with 20 quilt shops across New York. Since then, this fun shop hop has steadily grown: in 2015 all 50 states and several additional Canadian provinces planned fun for travelers and in 2016, there were even shops in Europe participating! The fun began on June 21 and ran through September 6, 2016.
To join in the Row by Row Experience, shoppers simply visited any participating quilt shop during the summer and ask for their free row pattern. Patterns are limited to one per person and are for in-person shoppers/walk-in customers only. We have really enjoyed our experience with this fun shop hop...we have met new friends and customers from so many different states and from Canada. We are lucky to be located so close to Washington, DC, a vacation destination for so many families, and appreciate how many people made plans to visit us in years past and this year too!
Each state/area has a Facebook page (visit the Row by Row website for links) and participating shops post photos of their rows, license plates and quilts submitted for a prize. Note that you do not have to be a member of Facebook to see the Row by Row photos! Shops love to be creative with the theme each year as they work it into their row, so visit to see the wide variety in how each year’s theme is interpreted. The Virginia state Facebook page includes Artistic Artifacts: www.facebook.com/VARowbyRowExperience.
Our Row by Row Experience Winner!
Pictured here, Judy Beigbeder of Lewes, Deleware (left in photo) peeks over the corner of her 2016 Row by Row Experience quilt, “Welcome to Point Pleasant,” Artistic Artifacts' winning quilt for 2016.
Quilters were eligible to win a prize stash of 25 fat quarters (that’s 6¼ yards of fabric) by first, completing a quilt using at least 8 different rows from 8 different 2016 participating shops, and second, being the first to bring it into a shop to win. There is one prize per shop, as well as one prize per quilter. (A completed quilt means it must be quilted, bound and labeled to be eligible for a shop prize; the deadline for turning in completed quilts was October 31, 2016.) In addition to the fat quarter fabric prize, most shops are offer a bonus prize for those using the store’s row in your quilt — we always do!
Setting Rows: Use Your Creativity
Each year you decide what pattern to use for your quilt. Stack your rows, arrange around a center medallion, make them horizontal, vertical, upside down, on the front, on the back, whatever you like! You are the designer. Be creative and have fun, but to be eligible to win, you must make certain you have used 8 different rows from 8 different participating shops.
