The batik artist Arifin is one of the leaders of a new generation of Indonesian batik artists, expressing his subjects in an abstract form. Born in a small village in Sumatra (an island in western Indonesia), at the age of 14 he moved to the city of Yogjakarta, the capital of Yogyakarta Special Region in Java, Indonesia, known for its classical Javanese fine art and culture: batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows.
